Better Balance Program at Peninsula Private Hospital!
Peninsula Private Hospital has developed 4 x new Outpatient Programs in their Rehabilitation Unit, including one program that specifically focuses on fall prevention.
There are multiple risk factors that contribute to falls, these may include;
- history of falls
- confusion or disorientation
- multiple medications
- poor physical condition
- poor vision
- fear of falling
- mobility issues
- environmental factors.
As falls increase with age, it's important for patients to engage with challenging balance exercises for 2 or more hours per week.
Doing so on an ongoing basis has been proven to reduce falls risks in older adults living in the community.
The Better Balance Program is designed for people who have had a fall or at risk of falling and teaches patients:
- Strategies for performing everyday tasks without increasing falls risk
- Improve confidence
- Improve overall strength and endurance
- Improve capacity for walking
- Address the factors associated with poor balance and improve balance reactions
- Provide education regarding risk factors associated with falls and strategies to reduce them
The Better Balance Program runs twice a week for six weeks. Each session is two hours and includes an education and exercise component.
All sessions are delivered by health professionals with extensive experience in their fields, including a Rehabilitation Consultant, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy and Dietitian.
The program has already gained great traction and the classes have increased from one day per week to two days per week, receiving interest not only from internal patients, but also from aged care and independent facilities.
