Over 350 Emergency Nurses met in Sydney on the 11-13 October for the 15th International Conference for Emergency Nurses.
The focus of the three day conference was addressing the intellectual, emotional and social needs of our emergency nursing workforce.
Representing Healthscope, was the the Northpark Private Hospital Emergency Department team, who presented their work to all delegates on the their Nurse Call Back initiative, which subsequently won the best international innovation project 2017.
Northpark Private's innovative Nurse call Back system aims to address an identified need for patients discharged from emergency care.
Vanessa Gorman, Nurse Unit Manager of Northpark Private's Emergency Department explains that the initiative started in January 2017 as part of a quality improvement project to improve patient outcomes, reduce adverse events and provide patients with an opportunity to provide feedback about the ED.
"Patients are identified at the point of discharge for nurse call back, and receive a phone call within 72 hours of leaving the ED. The nurses follow a script when speaking with patients and also use an escalation algorithm to ensure that patients receive clinical advice," explains Vanessa.
The call back intervention was based on international evidence that nurse follow up post discharge improved outcomes for patients, and in particular those over the age of 65.
"Our study has been successful with a high proportion of discharged patients receiving a follow up phone call. Early deterioration has been identified in an important number of patients discharged home, leading to early intervention. Overwhelmingly patients are very happy with the service and feedback that they ‘feel cared for and valued’," explains Vanessa.
The recent win of best international innovation project, was a proud moment for project leads, Vanessa Gorman, Emily Knights, Professors Biswadev Mitra and Richard Gray.
"We all feel that the service adds value to the patients experience at Northpark Private ED", said Vanessa.
