Knox Private Hospital expands to accommodate growing patient demand
Knox Private Hospital formally recognised the completion of a 15 month, $80 million redevelopment, which has seen the hospital become one of Victoria's largest private healthcare facilities.
On Friday 3 June, Healthscope Managing Director and CEO Robert Cooke, officially unveiled Knox Private Hospital's expansion alongside Federal Health Minister, The Hon Sussan Ley MP, said the hospital redevelopment was in line with the projected demand from one of Victoria's largest growth corridors.
He said that as the largest private hospital in the east, the redevelopment allows for a greater number of patients to be treated.
"In the last year alone Knox Private Hospital treated 29,000 inpatients, 32,000 outpatients and over 18,000 patients were seen by the Emergency Department. We expect to see an increase in our patient numbers over the next five years in line with residential growth,"
Mr Cooke said.
Knox Private Hospital's redevelopment includes 60 new patient-beds, 10 new consulting suites, a new admission and discharge area for patients as well as a new kitchen and additional car parking.
Jenny Kent, Regional General Manager for Healthscope's Eastern Hospitals explained that the current redevelopment brought the hospital to a total of 359 patient-beds with 12 operating theatres.
"Prior this most recent development Knox was operating at an occupancy rate of 94% per annum. The additional capacity in beds numbers, consulting suites and support services ensures that we are able to continue meet the growing need for private health care services in our region now and into the foreseeable future,"Â explains Ms Kent.
Knox Private provides healthcare services to over 1.2 million people, which equates to 25% of Victoria's population.
"We want to ensure that our patients are receiving world-class healthcare, right here in the eastern suburbs, in their own backyard."Â
Patients, doctors and visitors are delighted with the expanded facilities at the hospital.
"When we undertook the design phase of the expansion we did so with the patient and visitor experience in mind, we wanted their transition through their hospital stay to be seamless,"Â explains Ms Kent.
"We believe that our patients' healthcare experience starts from the moment they walk in the door, so we consulted with our staff, doctors, and consumer consultants to ensure each element of the hospital is warm and accommodating."
The expansion of Knox Private Hospital has had a significant positive impact in terms of the local industry and job growth.
Throughout the hospitals expansion Knox Private Hospital provided over 350 construction jobs over the 15 month period and has recruited nearly 400 clinical and allied health positions.
"Knox Private Hospital is one of the largest employers in the greater eastern suburbs, currently with 1,500 staff and in partnership with 1,200 specialists and doctors,"Â explains Ms Kent.
Knox Private Hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties including, but not limited to, cardiology, cardiac and general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, plastics and vascular surgery.
The hospital services are supported by Ringwood Private Hospital the dedicated cancer care centre, and The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre which provides comprehensive patient rehabilitation healthcare services.
Knox Private Hospital introduced the first, single site da Vinci surgically assisted robot into Victoria. In the first 12 months 130 robotic assisted surgical cases over a number of surgical specialities have been completed.
"We are fortunate to be able to attract a high calibre of medical and surgical specialists, many of whom are leaders in their field. Our staff are the backbone of the hospital, their compassion, care and expertise is a constant reminder of the skills that are required when providing a service to the community,"explained Ms Kent.
"The future is bright for Knox Private Hospital, and a master plan is in place to ensure the hospital is able to continue to grow to meet community demand."
Stage three of the master plan provides a new emergency department, four additional theatres, a central sterile services department, a new maternity unit, and an endoscopy unit.
It is anticipated that stage three construction will commence in mid-2017.
