Revolutionary Robotic surgery now available for ACT patients

Minimally invasive surgery for cancer patients in the ACT is now a reality, with the launch of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System at National Capital Private Hospital this week.

As the first of its kind in the ACT, the da Vinci Xi robot is the next frontier for minimally invasive surgery. It utilises advanced technology to enable surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations through small incisions as opposed to traditional ‘open’ surgery.

ACT and surrounding region patients have previously had to travel to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne for this surgery.

Ms Elizabeth Porritt, General Manager of National Capital Private Hospital, said the hospital is determined to provide ACT patients with the very best health services available.

“We are committed to being a leader in this field and will continue to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients,” said Ms Porritt.

Dr Hodo Haxhimolla, Urological Surgeon at National Canberra Private Hospital, will perform a Radical Prostatectomy (total removal of the prostate for cancer) and Nephrectomy (removal of the kidney for cancer) with the da Vinci Xi Surgical System at National Capital Private Hospital this week.

“The da Vinci Xi System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of urology, gynaecology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery,” said Dr Haxhimolla. “It allows the surgeon to operate with a high level of precision so that in cases, for example partial removal of the kidney (nephrectomy), we are able to preserve as much of the healthy kidney as possible, removing the tumour only, leading to better outcomes for the patient”.

Dr Haxhimolla was involved with the first team to perform robotic prostatectomy in Australia, but has had to travel to other cities to perform this surgery until now.

Minimally invasive surgery provides a range of benefits for patients including a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications, less need for pain medicine, minimal scarring and a faster recovery time.

The da Vinci is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of the EndoWrist instruments working inside the patient’s body. The system provides surgeons a highly-magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands.

National Capital Private Hospital has purchased themulti-million dollar da Vinci Xi Surgical System which is scheduled to expand its use to other specialities.
