Health Minister Greg Hunt officially opens new Holmesglen Private Hospital at the heart of the south-eastern corridor of Melbourne

Access to state-of-the-art and 24/7 healthcare has become a reality for residents of Melbourne’s bayside with the recent opening of Holmesglen Private Hospital.

Healthscope Managing Director and CEO Robert Cooke, together with the Federal Health Minister The Hon Greg Hunt MP officially opened Holmesglen Private Hospital today.

The Minister said that the 166 bed hospital signifies Healthscope’s investment into the provision of private healthcare in Victoria.

“Holmesglen Private Hospital will provide specialist medical services to over 1 million local residents of Glen Eira, Kingston and Bayside dedicated healthcare including direct access to a local Emergency Department, which has previously not been available. This certainly shows clear foresight in healthcare planning for the future,” said The Hon Greg Hunt MP.

Five years in the making, the hospital came about by a shared idea between Healthscope and Holmesglen TAFE to provide a premier training hospital for nursing and allied health students.

"Together Healthscope and Holmesglen TAFE have provided future health care leaders with a state of the art training hospital,” explains Mr Cooke.

The hospital, which cost in excess of $100 million, comprises of eight operating theatres including a catheter laboratory, intensive and coronary care units, emergency department as well as supporting radiology, pathology and pharmacy services, welcomed its first patients in January 2017.

“It has been a long road to open. With this location previously being a training hotel for Holmesglen TAFE students, we have spent the last five years planning, expanding and constructing, making it fit for purpose as a leading private hospital,” Mr Cooke said.

Holmesglen Private Hospital is one of the largest employers in the area, employing over 500 staff in clinical and non-clinical roles, as well as partnering with 500 doctors to provide care to the tens of thousands local patients requiring medical assistance.

“With the next closest emergency department 15km away, Holmesglen Private will provide world-class hospital services to local residents, dramatically reducing their need to seek healthcare out of their local area, “said Mr Cooke.

A continued development plan is in place to allow Holmesglen Private to grow to approximately 250 beds, 11 operating theatres and a 20 bay emergency department in line with demand.

The state-of-the-art, Holmesglen Private Hospital, which opened in January 2017, provides an extensive range of healthcare services including a 24-hour Emergency Department, Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and Oncology services as well as providing a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services.

Located at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE Moorabbin campus, the hospital provides clinical practice as well as teaching and research for nursing and allied health students.

This exciting new development will form the Holmesglen Health Precinct and the range of services available will reduce the need for local residents to travel outside the bayside area for anything other than the most highly specialised types of treatment.
